Day 5 by Deb Hoffman
{My mom wrote this early this morning.}
7am.
It’s day 5. We have hunkered down in our “Barracks”— our corner of the hospital room.
Our “ammunition”: our cell phones, our computers, our stamina.
Our rations: juice, soda, fruit, granola bars stacked on the window ledge.
We have dug in to fight Greg’s fight to get off the ventilator.
Our Allies: the docs, nurses, respiratory therapists who perform their duties 24/7.
Our reserve troops: friends and family, near and far, who are praying and sending positive energy our way.
We can now recognize the alarm sounds by their own signals. The screens above the bed records vital signs and pressures/ volumes and all the intrequecies that is imperative to breathing, an automatic function that is supposed to just maintain itself without our help.
Our mission and resolve: GET GREG WELL
